The sense of dress truly sets gentlemen apart from modern men. Unfortunaly most men nowadays don’t wear the kind of clothes who represent classic values. More and more men keep on dressing like boys. I think its sad that we lost the sens of dress men had not so long ago. But I do see a small group which grows that still want to represent that classic masculine style we had. And I know you are one of them. And therefore welcome. To help you in your journey to dress like a true gentleman, and more inmportanly to become one yourself. I will discuss some things a gentleman never wears, so you don’t ruin your goal to have a sophisticated appearance. Here are the 7 most important things to avoid in your wardrobe.

Number 1: A gentleman never wears sneakers or running shoes. The only time you should wear running shoes or sneakers is while running or going to the gym, that’s it. You don’t wear them in your day-to-day life. I know some of you might think, “But they are so comfortable.” Yes, they can be, but they make you look like an immature man. And by the way, investing in a good pair of leather shoes can be just as comfortable, if not more. Leather shoes mold to your feet over time, providing both support and sophistication. They are versatile, durable, and exude a sense of refinement that sneakers simply cannot match. And even if your outfit looks classy but you wear sneakers, it will ruin your appearance completely. You should know that the right footwear can make or break an outfit, so choose wisely to maintain a polished look. Whether it’s a pair of Oxfords for formal occasions or loafers for a casual outing, the right shoes speak volumes about your attention to detail and commitment to excellence.

Number 2: The next thing I’m about to tell you is a logical follow-up to the last one. Wearing your gym clothing outside the gym.  many modern men wear their sporty clothes all day just because they are going to the gym for 1 hour. Please stop doing this. People don’t know if you still need to go to the gym or if you are just done working out. It seems gross to know that you have not showered after the gym and are still walking around with your gym clothing. You should always use the changing facilities and showers immediately after sporting. This not only ensures proper hygiene but also demonstrates self-respect and consideration for others. So the next time you go to the gym, take some nice clothes with you to wear heading back home. A simple pair of chinos and a clean shirt can make all the difference in how you are perceived. Remember, a gentleman is always prepared and takes pride in his appearance, no matter the occasion.

Number 3: The next thing a gentleman never wears is tight clothes. I can understand that if you have taken good care of your body by working out frequently, you want to show it to the rest of the world. But it is the beauty of not trying to show too much off. If you wear tight clothes, you come across as someone who needs attention just because of your body. You are way more than that, young man. Besides that, tight clothes are an immature aesthetic. They are not nice and classic. They make you look like a less-serious man. You should understand that true style is about subtlety and balance. Your clothing should fit well—neither too tight nor too loose—and highlight your best features without being overtly flashy. This approach communicates confidence and self-assurance.

Number 4 is wearing Baggy clothes.  I know this is a trend of the last couple of years, but a gentleman is not influenced by trends. We wear classic, timeless pieces because they reflect our values and personality. Wearing clothes who are trending are making you look immature, as if you can’t find your own style. Baggy clothes also make you look less masculine. Where tight clothes show your physique too much, baggy clothing hides your physique too much. A gentleman seeks the middle ground—clothing that fits well and flatters his shape without being overly revealing or excessively loose. This balance is key to achieving a polished and sophisticated look that stands the test of time.

Number 5: is Wearing shorts in the winter. Especially in Europe, men wear them all the time, even when it’s freezing. When you can, always choose long trousers over short ones. There are lots of shorts that a gentleman can wear, but they should be reserved for appropriate occasions and the right seasons. If you want to know more about which kind of shorts are the best for summer, I have a blog where I also write in detail on what to wear as a man with class. You can find it in the description. However A gentleman knows to save the shorts for summer and wears trousers as much as possible. This  maintains a sense of decorum and appropriateness. Winter is the perfect time to embrace tailored trousers, wool blends, and layered looks that exude warmth and sophistication.

Number 6: Wearing a backpack. A backpack is what schoolboys wear. So as long as you are not a little boy anymore, wear a briefcase. Even if your outfit is on point, wearing a backpack ruins your appearance completely. However, there are some occasions where it is necessary, for example, when you are hiking. You should understand that accessories are an extension of his style, and start selecting them with care. A sleek leather briefcase or a structured messenger bag not only serves a practical purpose but also adds a touch of elegance to your overall look. It’s these small details that will set you apart from the rest.

Number 7: A gentleman never wears clothes that have not been washed and properly maintained. I see so many men wear either smelly clothes or clothes that are totally messed up. Crumpled and wrinkled clothes are a no-go. Linen is the only exception where it can look great if it’s a little wrinkled. It is important to know how to properly take care of your clothing. I also see too often yellow marks under the armpits, and that is disgusting. Those yellow marks are a result of sweating and not washing clothes the right way. You should take pride in your appearance, and that includes ensuring your clothes are clean, pressed, and well-maintained. This attention to detail reflects self-respect and consideration for others, reinforcing the timeless values of a true gentleman.
