How to Create The Classic Gentlemen’s Hairstyle

Modern men wear a much greater variety of haircuts then classic men. Previously there was a much more rigidly masculine hairstyle that men could form too.

The roots of the classic masculine hairstyle can be  traced back to the 1920s and 30s. It was a time when grooming was a daily routine for men. Barbershops became cultural hubs and your haircut said something about who you were. The styles were influenced by military grooming standards, the silver screen of Old Hollywood, and the early days of rock ‘n roll. But When I think of classic masculine hairstyles, I immediately think of James dean or Cary grant. They are true legends who embraced the beautiful timeless style. They wore their hair  short but with  a scissor cut that did not show any skin.  They had the look that endured for nearly a century. Today I want to explain that classic masculine hairstyle and more importantly. How you can create one yourself. By the way, I also have a blog where I go into more detail on the classic style, so make sure to check it out.

The classic masculine hairstyle is characterized by short sides and a longer top, styled back or to the side with a defined shape and shine. These hairstyles weren’t messy or casual , they were sculpted and sharp. They communicated discipline, class, and masculinity. Whether you were a rebel without a cause or a man on Wall Street, this was the go-to look for decades. And it’s not just nostalgia — it’s still a style that speaks volumes today.

Here is What You Need to get this hairstyle.

To get this look, there’s one thing you absolutely need: oil-based pomade. Not water-based, not gel, and definitely not mousse.

Why? Because oil-based pomades offer hold, shine, and rework ability. They don’t dry out or harden like modern water-based products. That means you can restyle your hair throughout the day with just a comb, no need to add water or more product.

Oil-based pomades are typically made from ingredients like petrolatum, beeswax, and natural oils. They give that classic sheen and allow for sculpting that holds its shape without flaking or turning crusty. I am now using a specific pomade for a long time and I a truly love this one. But you have to Avoid water-based pomades if you’re going for authenticity. They’re more modern, designed to wash out easily, but they behave more like gels — stiff and less pliable. That’s not the vintage way.  An other tool you will need is a fine comb. This is how you can create the important definition.

No you know what you need, I will explain how to make the classic masculine hairstyle. Step 1: Start with Clean, Slightly Damp Hair
You don’t want your hair dripping wet, but a bit of moisture helps with control. If you just showered, towel-dry your hair and let it sit for a few minutes.

Step 2: Warm Up the Pomade. Oil-based pomades can be stiff in the tin. Scoop a fingertip’s worth, rub it between your palms until it softens and spreads easily. The heat from your hands helps activate the product.

Step 3: Apply Evenly
Work the pomade through your hair — from root to tip, front to back. Make sure you coat all of your hair, especially the top. Use your fingers to distribute it before picking up your comb.

Step 4: Comb It Through
Here’s where the magic happens. With the comb you can Choose your own style:

  • For a slick back, comb your hair straight back from your forehead.
  • For a side part, find your natural part line and comb the hair over neatly.

But Take your time. This is about precision, not speed.

Step 5: Fine-Tune the Shape
Use your comb and hands to perfect the angles. The beauty of oil-based pomade is that you can keep tweaking until it’s just right.

And just like that gentleman, you are done
